How we verify businesses

A badge on a listing should mean something specific. Here is exactly what ours mean, and what they do not.

Contact verified

This happens automatically. We e-mail a six-digit code to the address shown on the listing, and the owner enters it. It means someone who controls that e-mail address confirmed the listing. It does not mean we have checked the business itself.

Verified business

A person at SmartBiz Directory checked the business. A listing only gets this badge when all of these are true:

  1. It is contact verified. The owner proved they control the listing's e-mail address.
  2. The business really exists. Its Google Business Profile matches the listing (name, phone, address or website), or we have seen its company registration.
  3. The owner is tied to it. The e-mail address matches the business's website, or the phone number we confirmed is the one on its Google profile.
  4. No red flags. It is not a copy of someone else's business or a name that does not fit.

We keep a private note of what we checked and when, so every badge can be explained.

What the badges do not mean

  • They are not a recommendation or a guarantee of the quality of anyone's work.
  • A listing without a badge is not necessarily bad. The owner may not have verified it yet.
  • Reviews are written by customers and approved by the business before they appear. Reviews are not part of verification.
